Different Types of Warehouses Available and Their Intended Uses

Warehouses come in various shapes and have different functions which cater to different types of goods. Here is a list of the different variants:

  • Private

A private warehouse is normally built by retailers or companies to store their excess goods as part of their distribution channels. Only goods manufactured by the company will be stored within these facilities. However, due to the high cost of construction and land rights, most of the existing private warehouses are owned by large corporations.

  • Public

Public warehouses also are known as duty paid warehousing storage that are open to leases from the public. Most of the leasers are usually small and medium enterprises (SMEs) who are unable to afford the cost of constructing their own warehouses. These facilities offer short-term distribution warehousing solutions and are usually regulated by the government.

  • Bonded

Bonded warehouses are meant for imported goods which are not cleared by customs because of unpaid duty fees. The removal of these goods are not allowed until the duty fees are paid for but the warehouse may support the process of packing, labeling, grading and canning of the goods. These types of warehouses may be operated by the government or private entities (with licenses from the government) and will both be under strict regulation by custom officials. These warehouses also facilitate entrepôt trade – imported goods which are re-exported, as it allows importers to bypass the cost of custom duties.

  • Others

    Special Commodity

Sometimes, specialized warehouses must be constructed due to the nature of the goods. Examples would include, warehouses with oil tankers for the storage of petrochemicals and silos for agricultural products.

    Climate-Controlled

In some cases, factors such as temperature and humidity must be controlled for the storage of selected goods. For example, frozen products need to be stored away in low temperatures to maintain the freshness of the food and the humidity of the warehouse must be kept constant in order to store sensitive electronic parts.

Factors to Look Out for When Choosing Warehousing Services

When considering the need for warehousing services, one must consider certain factors to determine which warehouse would be the most suitable choice.

Production Rate

The rate at which you take to produce the good will determine the significance of warehouses in your distribution chain. For example, some agricultural produce are only grown yearly. As such, without the proper storage facilities in place, there will be a cap on the amount of goods that can be produced at a given point of time due to how much of it can be sold before it turns bad. However, by storing the goods properly and extending its shelf-life, excess goods can be produced and sold over a longer spread of time.

Price Stabilisation

By storing excess goods when there is a surplus and drawing on the reserves when supply is low, businesses will be able to limit fluctuations in the product prices.

Risk Bearing

It is important to note the degree to which the warehouse owner is liable for damages, deterioration, theft, fire and etc. As warehouse owners are often legally bounded by the contract of bailment to compensate the owner of the goods in the event that the goods are damaged while being stored. As such, warehouse owners need to take reasonable care and safeguard the goods in their possession. Hence, the greater the responsibility warehouse owners takes for the goods, the lower the risk you take up when storing in their warehouse.

Packing and Grading

Today, most supply chain warehousing support packing, processing and grading functions and can help to re-package goods into suitable sizes for distribution. As such, it is important to note the facilities provided by the warehouses to find out what best suits the needs of your business.
