When it comes to shipping your goods, it is always tough to decide between the various shipping methods.
In this article, we will discuss the cheapest transportation to ship from US to Indonesia and all you need to know to prepare for your shipment.
Estimated duration: 7 days
The fastest way to ship from US to Indonesia is by air freight, which is the transportation of cargo by plane. This shipment mode is suitable for time-sensitive parcels that are less bulky.
Estimated duration: 25 – 35 days
Another option is sea freight, which refers to transporting your cargo via ship vessels. If your goods are bulky and not as time-sensitive, go for this option.
Estimated duration: 30 – 45 days
At times when the distance between the origin and destination country is too far, trans-shipment is required. It simply refers to the shipment of cargo to an intermediate location prior to heading to its destination.
In this case, your goods will be exported from US to Singapore, where they will be handed to another vessel heading to Indonesia.
Out of the 3 methods, trans-shipment is the most affordable option.
This is mostly due to the fact that it
- Has more frequent connections (easier to arrange shipments) and
- Takes a longer time
However, the final cost is largely dependent on a few factors such as
- Time sensitivity of cargo
- Cargo dimensions and weight
Naturally, the more time-sensitive and heavier your cargo is, the higher the end cost will be.
Trans-shipment is mostly used when there are no direct connections from the origin to the destination country. But if you are looking for a budget-friendly option, this is the one for you.
Check if your cargo is controlled using this tool: Controlled Goods for Transhipment Form.
You can either key in a description of your items, the Harmonised System (HS) code or Competent Authorities (CA) product code.
If it is labelled as controlled, your goods will require proper authorisation from the CAs before any transhipment can be done. You are advised to check with the relevant CAs on the specific requirements.
Any materials that are anti-Muslim, communist or have the potential to disrupt order are also prohibited from entering Indonesia.
Export license or permit
Most items do not require an export license. However, if you are unsure, it is your responsibility to find out which federal agency has jurisdiction over your product.
Then, check this list of federal departments and agencies to see if you need a license.
Electronic Export Information (EEI)
There are 2 scenarios that require an EEI to be filed:
- when the value of the cargo classified under each individual Schedule B number is over $2,500 and/or
- if an export license is required to export the cargo
- Customs Identification Number (NIK)
- Importer Identification Number (API)
- Import license
There are 3 types of licenses: API-U (General Import License); API-P (Producer Import License); and a Limited Import License, also known as API Terbatas (API-T).
Each license permits you to import goods within a certain business sector only. Ensure that you have the right one for your cargo.
