Factors to consider when using Sea Freight Transport Services

  • Cost

When it comes to cost, sea freight is relatively cheaper as compared to air freight, and is hence more affordable. This is due to the ability to use lcl ocean services that allows consumer to save cost.

  • Time

Sea freight services are subjected to delays due to bad weather, for example. This would mean that shippers should only consider using sea freight when time is not an issue.

  • Reliability

Ships have the tendency of being off-schedule. To add on, unlike airlines that usually have daily flights, ocean lines typically only have weekly schedules. This would mean further delays in transportation and potentially, not arriving punctually on the designated arrival date.

  • Capacity

Sea freight is able to hold a much larger capacity as compared to air freight. There is, therefore, no need to worry about limited space on a ship.

  • Environmental Impact

Sea freight transportation emits less carbon dioxide than air freight services, deeming it to be the more environmentally friendly means of shipment.

What are the process involved in Sea Freight Transport Services?

The following illustrates the background processes involved in sea freight, given the context of shipping goods from a factory in country A to a shop in country B.

Trucking Service

Firstly, a truck would be utilised to transport a container to the factory in country A. The goods would then be packed into this container, together with other customers’ orders until it is full. Thereafter, the container is sealed to ensure the security and privacy of exporters and importers.

Selection of Shipping Port

Once a shipping port is chosen by the freight forwarder, they would proceed to sign a contract and provide the necessary paperwork that would reveal information regarding the exporter, importer and the goods being shipped. After all is settled, the container is loaded onto a ship and sets off to country B’s port.

Seeking Clearance Approval

A couple of days before the arrival of the ship, the captain would alert the government of country B by submitting a report in order to seek the approval of custom clearance. This report would provide details regarding the ship, crew and cargo.

Once clearance has been permitted, the ship enters B’s port and cranes will be used to unload the container. An inspection of the container would be done by custom authorities to tally the logistics present and the documents submitted.

Further Transportation by Land

Once all information is tallied, the container will be moved into a truck which will transport it to an import distribution centre. There, the container is unpacked and the contents are categorised. The products are then transported to the various shops in country B. Products will then arrive at the designated shop in country B.
