What is Export Freight Forwarding?
As technology improved over the past few decades, the world also grew to be more globalised. This created more accessibility between countries and helped increase the possibilities by which import and export could be done. The transportation of goods and products have now become easier to do and faster than ever before. There are three main modes of transportation by which your products to be moved: By air freight, sea freight and road freight. The freight forwarder will arrange for your products to be moved from their location to the intended destination through either one or a combination of these methods. There are different reasons to use either of the different modes of transport depending on many different factors (i.e. the type of product).
Types of Freight Forwarding
Air Freight
Air freight is the usage of aircrafts to transport your products. The main benefit of engaging an air freight forwarder is that it is the fastest mode of transport of the three. However, the price of shipping through air freight services is heavily dependent on the size and weight of your product. Transporting larger and heavier products through air freight will rack up quite a cost. Thus, if your business is time sensitive and your products are light and small, using air freight will be the most time and cost efficient mode of transport. Air freight delivery is also usually more reliable then sea freight in terms of making the scheduled delivery time as airlines are able to respond more quickly to any delays as compared to sea freight.
Sea Freight
Sea freight is another option by which you can move your products. This time the mode of transport are ships, usually large cargo vessels. These vessels usually charge per container rates. This makes it more affordable if you are transporting bulky objects or large shipments of products as compared to utilising air freight.
Land Freight (Trucking)
Trucking is normally not used alone as a mode of transport and is often used in conjunction with air or sea freight. Road freight services is normally used when the location for collection and delivery is relatively near and if frequent shipping is needed. Utilising trucks is the most efficient method of freight when the shipment is small and over a short distance. Another benefit is that deliveries can be done up to your doorstep if needed. However, road freight does not have the speed and capacity that is available for air and sea freight.
