Door to Door Sea Freight Service

What do Door to Door Sea Freight Service refer to?

Sea freight services refer to the transportation of cargo from an initial point to a final destination via ship. Door to door sea freight services would usually refer to intermodal transport, where more than one transport mode is used, which in this case would be shipping and trucking.

What are the processes involved?

  • Trucking

Firstly, a trucking company would be hired to pick up the goods from the factory in country A by transporting a container over. The container will then be securely sealed after it has been fully packed with all customers’ orders.

  • Selection of Shipping Port

A shipping port will be chosen by the freight forwarder for the goods to be shipped. The necessary contract and documentation would be settled and the container would be loaded onto a ship and head towards country B’s seaport.

  • Seeking Clearance Approval

A few days prior to the ship’s arrival, the captain of the ship is responsible for giving a pre-alert to country B’s government. A report containing relevant details of the ship, crew and cargo would be submitted in order to obtain custom clearance.

  • Inspection

When clearance has been approved, the ship enters B’s seaport and the container will be unloaded using cranes. An inspection of the container will be done by custom authorities in order to ensure that all items present are the same as the details stated in the submitted documents.

  • Further Transportation on Land

Once all information is tallied, the unloaded container will be loaded back into a truck which will further transport it to an import distribution centre. There, the container will be unpacked and the goods will be separated. Door to door delivery will then be provided to transport the products directly to the various shops in country B.

Factors to consider when choosing to use Sea Freight

Speed Matters

Sea freight would be a relatively slower mode of shipment as compared to air freight, as it would typically take weeks or months. Also, external conditions such as bad weather may cause further delays.

Cost Efficient

Since it takes longer to deliver cargo, sea freight is more affordable than air freight. Shippers who are working with a budget should consider engaging sea freight services if time is not an issue.

Capacity

Given the large capacity of ship vessels, sea freight is suitable for transporting cargoes that are larger in size and quantity.

Reliability

Ships operate based on weekly schedules and have the tendency to be off-schedule, unlike airlines. Sea freight services may therefore risk cargo arriving later than the stipulated arrival date.
