Cold chain logistics involves the transportation of temperature-sensitive goods. The quality of the shipment is protected by using careful logistical planning and specialised thermal and refrigerator packaging methods.

Air freight is the transportation of goods via an air carrier. It is one of the quickest shipping methods and is suitable for transporting goods with a short shelf life.

 

To protect the integrity of the cargo, goods transported via air freight are insulated with items like thermal blankets and dry ice.

Sea freight is the shipping of cargo via sea vessels. These sea vessels are loaded with specialised refrigerated containers that are designed for cold chain transportation. Shipping via sea freight requires a longer time but is much cheaper as compared to air freight.
Refrigerated trucking is the transportation of goods by truck in a cool, temperature-controlled environment. It is mainly used to move goods over short distances.

Here is a list of the most common temperature standards in cold chain logistics.

Deep freeze (-28°C – -30°C)

Used when transporting items like seafood, meat, and ice cream

Chill (2°C – 4°C)

Used when transporting fresh produce like fruits and vegetables, certain dairy products, and fresh meat

Cool chain (12°C – 14°C)

Used when transporting fresh produce, processed food, and over-the-counter drugs

Frozen (-16°C to – 20°C)

Used when transporting frozen meat and certain types of produce

Pharma (2°C – 8°C)

Used when transporting medical goods like medicines and vaccines
This refers to the facilities such as temperature-controlled warehouses used to store the goods before it gets transported.
These systems are used to bring the goods up to the appropriate temperature or keep it at the ideal temperature during storage and transportation.
These are specialised transportation used to move goods. They help to maintain a stable temperature and humidity level during transportation, ensuring the quality of the shipment upon arrival.
Cold processing refers to the facilities where goods are processed.
Loading boxes, crates or pallets used for the distribution of the goods.
Some types of cold chain technologies include

DRY ICE

Dry ice is an effective chilling agent that keeps the shipment frozen for an extended time. It is used when shipping items like medicine and food over a long distance.

REEFERS

Reefers are temperature-controlled transport units such as trucks, vans, or trailers. These vehicles are insulated and can be used to either keep cargo cool or warm.

EUTECTIC PLATES

Eutectic plates are filled with a cooling liquid that can be reused. They help to keep temperatures constant for a short period.

QUILTS

Quilts are insulated pieces that keep the shipment at a constant temperature for a limited time. They are a great choice for short-haul shipment.

LIQUID NITROGEN

Liquid nitrogen is used to keep cargo frozen for a long time and is primarily used when transporting biologics like tissue samples.

GEL PACKS

Gel packs are packages filled with a refrigerant gel designed to keep temperatures low. They are often used in shipping medical products.
